Helloooooooo! I’m back! Did you miss me? Well of course you did!
Talking of being away, Beloved and I have just returned from a Bucket List trip…
Only bloody Vegas baby!
We stayed at The Venetian (OMG!) and New York New York Hotels, visited practically every other major hotel (and bar) on The Strip, saw Cirque du Soleil’s KA (which was breathtaking), and took in the sights of Fremont Street (OMFG!)
Nothing can prepare you for the onslaught on the senses that is Sin City, but it was AH-MAZ-ING!
Vegas was just one stop on a multi-centre holiday – partly for my 50th and partly for a (truly beautiful) wedding in Utah, where Beloved had another opportunity to break out the Welsh tartan.
We don’t scrub up too badly, huh?
While we were in Utah, we also took in the Zion National Park.
Where I discovered shelves already laden down with the most awesome autumn and Halloween goodies.
I was in my element. Suzy Homemaker was (finally) doing Hallowe’en US-stylie!
Here is just a small selection of the delights I found on offer.
Jo-Ann Pumpkins 2017
Michaels Halloween 2017
Pier 1 Imports Halloween 2017
I *may* have had to buy another suitcase.
There was also the most darling little treasure trove of home decor in the Dixie National Forest called The Lofty Nest that we stumbled upon quite by accident. Of all the retail therapy I did during our trip (except Michaels… natch), this is one place I wish I’d spent more of my pennies – it was like a cosy shot of autumn all under one roof!
Despite being hotter than the surface of the sun, we had a brilliant 10 days Stateside and it was a total bonus being able to indulge my inner Halloween Queen in the land of great shopping. I couldn’t wait to share some of my finds over on social media and start hunting down the good stuff here in the UK.
But frankly, returning to the UK high street has been a bit of a let down.
Compared to America, us Brits are virtually starved of decent decorations. Admittedly, things have definitely improved the past couple of years with Homesense, TK Maxx, Wilko, Sainsbury’s and even B&M all offering more and more stylish Halloween goodies. But it’s still a far cry from what’s available across the pond.
I mean… just LOOK at this typewriter from TJ Maxx!
As a career PA with a Halloween obsession, I totally need this in my life!!
Even if we were to forget about Halloween for a moment, what the hell happened to autumn in this country? While the likes of Jo-Ann’s, Pier 1 and The Lofty Nest are stuffed to the rafters with pumpkins and burnt orange, UK shops move from summer to Christmas in a blink of an eye!
I wouldn’t mind, but it’s reached the point where fellow Brits think Hallowe’en is “an American thing”. And it’s not! Samhain is a Celtic festival that started right here in the UK! While our Samhain-loving cousins across the puddle have Halloween coming out of their ears, we Brits are left with something of a tumbleweed moment.
So… I’m on a one-woman mission to bring Halloween back to the UK! I’ve started a little campaign called #BringHalloweenBacktoBritain🇬🇧🎃🇬🇧, which calls for more stylish Halloween decorations for sale in our High Street stores.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against black and orange, but tacky black plastic and wall-to-wall fake blood and gore just ain’t my idea of stylish.
How about you?
If you’d like to join me, download the image above and share it with the hashtag #BringHalloweenBacktoBritain🇬🇧🎃🇬🇧 wherever you can. If you can’t access your emoji keyboard – just copy the full hashtag from here!
While you’re sharing, why not try tagging in your favourite high street stores. Who knows? Maybe, if enough of us band together, some of them will listen!
A hui hou,
