There’s nothing like a freshly decorated room to make you fall back in love with your home, don’t you think? But more importantly than that… it’s a GREAT excuse to make stuff to go in it!
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love the first few weeks after a makeover. It’s so exciting walking into a “new” room. I quite often find myself wandering in just to stare at it.
And maybe move something.
An inch here, an inch there.
Finishing a makeover is such a huge source of pride, especially when you do the majority of the work yourself. Sometimes, during one of said staring sessions, I am genuinely surprised by what I’ve achieved.
And when I look around at all the things I’ve made, it makes me feel doubly proud.
Take the master bedroom for instance. I’m still dining out on that chalk-painted furniture and I just adore my new dressing table.
From the upcycle, to the acrylic Louis chair, to the gallery wall created entirely from homemade art (including the nude by an über talented friend), it’s definitely the most stylish dressing area I’ve ever had!
So to complement it, I knocked up a few cheap and easy accessories that I think you’ll agree, look right at home whilst still retaining that little bit of Suzy Homemaker quirkiness.
DIY ‘Dior’ Poison bottle
Now you know me, I’m a Halloween gal through and through (no, Sue, really?!) and with that comes a fondness for potion bottles. A hankering for something darkly different to go with the room’s new dark decor, I had a lightbulb moment and made myself a very special, limited edition perfume bottle.
And all it took was an empty Mozart black liqueur bottle, a little gold vinyl (cut on the Cricut, of course) and some bling. To make it extra special, I displayed the bottle in a TK Maxx cloche and added a few black stick-on butterflies.
Well hello stylish dressing table accessory!
DIY ‘Chanel’ Makeup Brush Holder
I may be partial to walking on the dark side, but I’m also a bit of a label whore (again, Sue, REALLY?!) and while I spent far too much time on researched dressing table ideas on Pinterest, I saw lots of spent designer candles being used as vases or makeup brush holders.
What a brilliant way to give an expensive candle a new lease of life! Simply wash out your nicest glass candle in warm, soapy water (after you’ve burnt it, natch!), pop in your makeup brushes, et voilà!
I went searching for a suitable candle, but having sacrificed my lust for Jo Malone after seeing poor Beloved’s eyes on stalks at the price, I realised I might have to be a little more creative.
A rummage in the back of a cupboard revealed a glass cube that some time in a previous life used to hold a tealight.
Not quite the same, but needs must.
A good wash, a bit more gold and a little creative license later and hey presto! My very own stylish designer makeup brush holder! Too easy.
What do you reckon? Do you have a great bottle or a nice candle lying around just waiting to be made into a stylish dressing table accessory? As always, I’d love to know what you think of this project. Join in the chat on Facebook or Instagram, or drop a comment below to let me know.

I really wish I had the time and inspiration to do little projects like these. Your dressing table is gorgeous, both items are stunning and I would never have guessed you’d made them yourself if you hadn’t told us.
That is so kind of you to say Stacey, thank you! I do feel very lucky to be able to indulge my creative juices; I know only too well what it used to be like to have limited time. Sx
