Had I known I would become an overnight celebrity; I might have done something about those lockdown pounds. But not for one crazy moment did I ever think The Sun newspaper would be interested in The Witch at OneandSeventy’s Halloween home!
If you look past the sensationalised headline, my fat arse, and the awful lipstick, the article’s really quite good and I think it perfectly captures just how much of a nutter I am, when it comes to Halloween!
So how the hell did I end up in The Sun newspaper?
Martin and Roman’s Sunday Best – Episode 20
Well it all started when I was asked to be on the Tellybox.
Not something you hear every day!
In early October 2020, I received a random Instagram message from Cactus TV Productions, asking if I’d be interested in appearing on Martin and Roman Kemp’s Sunday morning show.
Naturally, I assumed it was a hoax and immediately checked out the researcher’s profile. But it was no scam! However sadly, after reiterating that my focus was Halloween decorating and not being a Halloween witch, I was told the item had been changed. I was no longer needed and I was replaced by a “real witch”.
We’ll say no more on that!
Disappointed, but kind of grateful I wasn’t put in a position that might seem to be rubbishing my path, I went back to decorating The School House. With no Open House to stress over this year, I could just potter along and take my time.
Or so I thought.
The Witch at OneandSeventy and The Sun Newspaper
Within half an hour of the TV slot being cancelled, I received another random Insta message from the Commissioning Editor of Fab Daily, the lifestyle Magazine at The Sun newspaper!
I have to say, I was hesitant at first. It might not be a scam, but my inner cynic had reservations about The Sun’s reputation. I certainly had no desire to be ripped apart by one of the UK’s most sensationalist tabloids!
But Beloved encouraged me to grab the opportunity with both hands and on the day I should have been filming for the Kemps, I was standing in my custom-made Halloween Hat and trying to smile for the camera without looking like a complete fright!
I’m not entirely convinced I managed the last part (OK, that’s Hagatha, not me!), but Ed the photographer did manage to capture some pretty decent photos.
Mark, the videographer also did a great job of including all the messages I wanted to get across, even if my makeup did make me look a little ghoulish. No discredit to makeup artist Carole Mayes – it IS Halloween, after all!
And there you have it. The Witch at OneandSeventy’s Halloween Home is finally famous! Well… for about 5 minutes, anyway. All in all, it was a cool experience and maybe one that will never be repeated.
Of course, there are going to be people who are quick to judge. Those who can’t see past a misleading headline (since when do I do horror?), or who completely mis-read it altogether. Clearly, I do not spend £5,000 a year on Halloween (who does?) and the £400-odd I can sometimes drop on decorations and supplies to make my Curious Creations is way less than some people spend on Christmas!
But in the main, I hope my little foray into celebrity shares my passion for Halloween and maybe, just for those 5 minutes, helps to bring a little lighthearted fun to what continues to be dark and challenging times.
